Opposition, my dear friend.

I just spent the last week creating and partaking in the magic. 43 courageous women in the jungle of the Dominican Republic. The Wyld Retreat takes a year of personal preparation and it then feeds me for a year. Rinse and repeat! I knew the Dominican Republic was part of the sunny Caribbean and I also knew we were staying in treehouses in the jungle. I am not sure how my brain didn't connect the dots. Sun and Rain. Ah, the beauty of opposition.

In “Think Like a Monk”, by Jay Shetty, he shares an experiment in the Arizona desert where scientists built the Biosphere II. “A huge steel and glass enclosure with purified air, clean eater, nutrient rich soil, and lots of natural light. It was meant to provide ideal living conditions for the flora and fauna within. And while it was successful in some ways, in one it was an absolute failure. Over and over, when the trees inside the Biosphere grew to a certain height, they would simply fall over. They realized a key element necessary to the trees’ health: wind. They respond to that pressure and agitation by growing stronger bark and deeper roots to increase their stability.

How do you feel or respond to opposition? Are you afraid? Are you an ostrich? Do you complain? How about avoidance? Do you bare down and prepare for the worst? I want to share some life changing practices that have helped me lean into opposition and put my arm around it. Opposition, my dear friend.

-Release your jaw and create space between your teeth

-Tongue is loose and heavy in your mouth (not pressing on the top)

-Breathe through your nose

-Let your pelvic floor let go as you exhale

These simple physical practices will help you keep your wits about you and create space physically. In turn, our parasympathetic nervous system will engage to stop the cycle. No more fight or flight. The mind is taking cues from the body which is why these practices are so effective. Just like in the Biosphere we want stronger bark and deeper roots. Trying to manipulate or control your environment is not what you want. You want to trust and love yourself enough to know you can make it in any environment.
